WARNING Be very careful that you do not treat with more power than 500 mW. This can cause burning of the tissue and can be very dangerous. For the device to be considered non-significant risk it has to fall in the classification of 3b or lower. If your laser has the potential to be turned to a higher power than 500 mW it becomes a liability. Several burns have been reported in conjunction with the use of these types of lasers for acupuncture. Also make sure the laser has FDA approval to be marketed in the USA for your protection. Also, you don't want to treat with too low of power. The energy given by the laser decreases exponentially after entering the body. You must have enough power to penetrate and get the results needed. Any power over 150 mW will give you the treatment power that will be sufficient.
Does Wavelength Matter? Absolutely! Most research studies indicate that the optimum wavelengths for penetration and biostimulation is between 750nm and 850nm any wavelength above or below this range is not nearly as effective. Anything above 850nm will be quickly absorbed by water and fatty tissue and does not effectively penetrate the cell membrane wall. Any wavelength below the range will not be able to penetrate the tissue layers because of the shorter wavelength. There are studies that prove over and over again the effectiveness of wavelengths between 750 and 850nm. There are very few studies proving the effectiveness of 900 and above but to the contrary they actually prove the negative. |
